Who Our Father Is
In ancient times people were named and known by their family and sometimes tribal connections. For example, someone might be called Jonah ben Amittai, meaning Jonah, son of Amittai; or Merari bar Levi, meaning Merari, a son of Levi; or Maakah bat Absolom, meaning Maakah, daughter of Absolom.
As soon as God becomes our Father, we receive a new identity—a new name and potential, a new inheritance. Learning more about who our Father is helps us establish our true identity. I had no idea, at first, how important and life-changing this reality is.
Long ago, the Lord spoke these words through the prophet Jeremiah:
…Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom,Let not the mighty man glory in his might,Nor let the rich man glory in his riches; But let him who glories glory in this,That he understands and knows Me,That I am the Lord, exercising lovingkindness, judgment, and righteousness in the earth. For in these I delight,” says the Lord. (Jeremiah 9:23–24, NKJV)
Now, I treasure this verse. I’m able to see that in truth nothing we can learn is of greater value than what gives us more knowledge of the Lord. And learning more of who our Father is, shows us more of who He says we are in relation to Him.
For example, God’s revelation that He is our Creator can help us realize this: He knows intimately how we are made; in every way, He knows us better than we know ourselves. Contrary to the idea abroad in the world right now that we must “find ourselves,” no one else can reveal our human potential, as individuals or as a race, both for good or for evil, like He can.
Jesus declared: “This is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent” (John 17:3, NKJV). No other knowledge can compare with the knowledge of the Lord. It is, literally, life to us. If what the Lord says about humankind and His purpose in creating us doesn’t define and inspire us, we are building on falsehoods and are as good as lost or dead to our true potential.
Jesus also said: “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me” (John 14:6, NKJV). I began to experience the veracity of these words when Jesus first appeared to me, revealing His Presence and filling me with His Spirit. I began to understand the truth of these words through concentrated Bible studies, revealing who God has shown and said He is....
